Important Tax Changes for 2009 include…

·         First Time Homebuyers Credit Extended and Expanded
Credit is up to $8,000.00 — No payback
2008 Returns can be amended to claim credit.
Purchased between January 1, 2009 and June 30, 2010. Long-time homeowners can now receive a credit of up to $6,500 for replacing their principal residence.

·         First $2,400 of Unemployment Tax Free in 2009

·         Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy

Tax credit of 30% of qualifying property up to $1,500

Credit applies to added insulation, energy- efficient exterior windows and energy-efficient heating and air conditioning systems

·         Increased Credits for Education

American Opportunity Credit modifies Hope credit up to $2,500 per student. The credit now applies to books and course materials and is available for four years of post-secondary education, rather than the two formerly covered by the Hope credit.

The Lifetime Learning credit has been increased to $2,000 and is available for graduate students not covered by the American Opportunity Credit.

·         Government Retiree Credit

Retirees receiving a pension from any state, local or federal government are entitled to a $250.00 credit if they did not receive an economic recovery payment in 2009. The credit is calculated on Schedule M.
