Birthdays and anniversaries, holidays and special occasions such as Mother’s Day and Father’s Day all give you opportunities to focus on preserving a good relationship with your aging parents.

Getting bogged down with caregiving burdens and financial stress can get in the way of enjoying the relationship with your aging loved one.  Try taking a different approach this year by giving the best gift possible: Time.  In fact, according to the American Journal of Public Health, frequent interaction with family and friends, volunteering, and other social activities may delay age-related memory loss.1 Slow down by sticking to a little acronym that will help you remember the real meaning behind these special celebrations: T.I.M.E.

Redefining Excellence in Laser and Cosmetic Dermatology.

Patients often ask “Is it truly possible to turn back the clock and reverse aging in a safe, dramatic, and healthy way?” The answer, yes it is!

Clinical advances in laser and cosmetic dermatology have resulted in a myriad of nonsurgical, minimally invasive treatment options for patients.

Photodynamic skin rejuvenation is an FDA approved procedure that has opened the door to a new era of “non-ablative” laser resurfacing that in addition to anti-aging eliminates precancerous skin lesions (actinic keratosis) and reduces future risk of skin cancer. Egg Donation – A Highly Successful Method of Family Building

“It seems that more and more couples are having trouble getting pregnant. Why is that?” One reason is that women in today’s society frequently postpone child-bearing while they pursue a career. In general, fertility declines with each passing year after a woman’s 34th birthday. The chance for successful conception drops even more sharply after the age of 40.  After age 46 live births are rare. This decline is due in large part to the fact that a 40-year old woman’s eggs are, well, 40 years old. These older eggs tend to be less likely to develop into viable embryos after fertilization.  In addition, women are born with a limited number of eggs and cannot make any more after they are born. This seems unfair when compared to a man’s reproductive system which makes new sperm constantly throughout his adult life.  It is not only the older woman who can experience a shortage of eggs.  Some women will run out of good quality eggs even in their early 30’s and can have a premature menopause.  Some women may have had one or both ovaries surgically removed, leaving their egg supply lacking. Other women may have undergone chemotherapy or radiation therapy to battle a cancer, leaving them with a shortage of eggs. Don’t Wait to Talk About Hospice

It’s an all too common situation. A family is at the bedside of a loved one who is seriously ill and nearing the end of life. Each member of the family has a different idea of what should be done and what the patient would have wanted.

Far too many people wait until they are in the midst of a health care crisis before thinking about what options are available or what care they or their loved ones would have wanted. Hospice professionals deal with these challenging situations every day – that’s what they are trained to do.

When a family is coping with a serious illness and a cure is no longer possible, hospice provides the type of care most people say they want at the end of life: comfort and dignity. Considered to be the model for high-quality, compassionate care for people with a life-limiting illness, hospice care includes expert medical care, pain management, and emotional and spiritual support. Care is provided by an inter-disciplinary team of professionals and trained volunteers. The wishes of the patient and family are always at the center of care. A Rite of Passage?

donaldfstarn_cmyk

By Donald F. Starn

For those who are under the age of 21, drinking alcohol is too often symbolized as a rite of passage. Is this really the message that we want to convey to the children and youth of our community? Is this adult attitude at least in part responsible for the fact that the average age of first use of alcohol in Burlington County is 11.3 years of age?

According to student surveys conducted in various Burlington County schools by the Burlington County Coalition for Healthy Communities, alcohol is the most widely used substance of abuse among our youth.  Alcohol use is embedded in our culture, so much so that teenagers drink in spite of the fact that it is illegal and with the knowledge that they may be harming themselves when they consume alcohol. Saving Our Youth

By Beth Leibson

By Beth Leibson

By any measure, Joseph was an exceptional teenager. An excellent student, he brought his sensitivity to his writing, violin playing, and figure drawing. If he was passionate about nature – and he loved camping and hiking – he was even more so about his relationships with family and friends. He also struggled with depression.

At age 17, Joseph killed himself. Continue reading Saving Our Youth
