Outstanding Woman: Cheryl Conway

BCW_OctNov2009.qxp:Layout 1Cheryl Conway has dedicated her professional life to improving the futures of disadvantaged children and their families. Serving as the Chief Executive Officer of Crossroads Programs for the last eight years has allowed Cheryl to focus on her favorite age group: teenagers!

Crossroads Programs, a Burlington County-based nonprofit provides residential and community-based services to more than 300 youth, ages newborn to 21, each year. Crossroads believes that all youth deserve a chance to discover and use their inherent strengths and talents in order to become successful, contributing adults.  Agency services promote positive, healthy development by fostering responsibility, resiliency, and respect for self and others.

“I think it’s important to encourage kids – especially those who do not feel a sense of belonging in our society – to discover their unique identity and to put that to work to not only fulfill themselves but also to benefit others around them.  Their search for identity coincides with a stage in their life when they are seeking, desperately, to fit in with their peers and with adults.  Positive messages from adults mean so much to them, despite their apparent indifference,” says Cheryl.  “And, people forget how much fun teens can be.”

Cheryl embodies the notion that “it takes a village to raise a child”. She has captured the spirit of this adage through her dedication and drive to ensure that young people from all walks of life lead healthier, more productive lives. She has a particular passion for Crossroads’ teen mothers and their babies, “With our help and support, these young women have an opportunity to give their infants many of the things they did not have as children.”

Cheryl is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, with a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Pennsylvania.  Her husband, Bruce Conway, has also dedicated his life to human services, serving as the President of the United Way of Burlington County since 1988.
