Outstanding Woman: Consuelo A. Harris

harrisAs CEO of A.D.E.P.T. (Adult Developmental Educational Pre-Vocational Training) Programs, Inc., Consuelo A. Harris manages six placement programs in Burlington County that help developmentally disabled adults live productive lives within the community.

A graduate of Delaware State University, Consuelo was introduced to developmentally disabled adults at the age of eight, when she accompanied her father to State schools and Developmental Centers in the early 1970’s. She was impressed by his dedication and feeling of accomplishment as he prepared sponsors to care for the developmentally disabled individuals who were mainstreaming into the community.
A.D.E.P.T. is a private, non-profit agency that currently serves 50 developmentally disabled adults. The agency offers residential placement in group homes and supervised apartments in Burlington County through contracts with the New Jersey Division of Developmental Disabilities.

A.D.E.P.T. enables participants to live and work within the community, and helps them participate in local sports leagues and programs. The agency’s mission is to provide the highest quality residential and programmatic services they are capable of, and to strive in every action, responsibility and duty to meet or exceed the expectations of their consumers and colleagues.

Consuelo believes that every individual has the right to live the fullest and most productive life possible. “I desire to promote a sense of pride and self-worth to all those who pass through A.D.E.P.T.,” says Consuelo.

Consuelo manages 70 full and part time staff members. Her responsibilities include reporting to the Board of Directors and management oversight of Human Resources, Resi-dential Services, Facilities Management, and Con-tractual Agreements. She oversees one group home and four supervised apartment programs, as well as a Challenge Grant Program.

Consuelo is married and has two children, Darrick Jr. and Elena. The family attends Mount Nebo Holy Church and their religious beliefs make Consuelo’s work a passion for the whole family. She strives for excellence in everything she does, explaining, “I may not reach the mark every time, but I am always aiming high. There are no limits!”
